One of the victims of COVID 19 was our Studio Art Clay Unit, during which students were to have created an Aztec or Mayan-influenced sun or deity.
We planned to cover paper bowls with clay slabs to create "hump forms," then add clay appendages as rays and build/carve facial features and designs to make dimensional faces in low relief.
We got as far as stuffing the paper bowls with newspaper to hold the weight of the clay and drawing designs for our terra cotta sun wall hangings.
Below are some of the wonderful designs students envisioned. Perhaps at another time, when COVID 19 is behind us, these ideas will come to fruition.
OBJECTIVES FOR CLAY SKETCHES:
Originality
Shows Mayan or Aztec influence through subject matter and patterns/ornamentation
Workability: Is the design simple enough to translate to clay? Does it have potential for both building out ("relief") and carving in (subtractive techniques)?
