Unit 2: Line Quality
Homage to a Line Artist of the Student's Choice
It's YOUR Turn to be the student! Studio Art students were introduced to the artists in this slide show in much the same way you are now. Please hover over the main slide to reveal the "PLAY" prompt, then view the slides before you look at the students' homages below. What do you notice about the line quality in each artist's style? Do you see that quality and other characteristics of the artist's style synthesized in the students' work?
Famous Artists Who Emphasized Line:
1. Jean-Michel Basquiat 2. Jean Dubuffet 3. Keith Haring 4. Pablo Picasso (Line Drawings) 5. Philip Guston 6. Roy Lichtenstein |
The Assignment...
Students were given a choice of studying one of six renowned artists whose work emphasizes the use of Line, the first Element of Art. At the end of the unit, students "jigsawed," meeting in small groups that included "experts" in the style of each artist. Participants reported on their artist of choice and showed samples of the artist's work, thereby educating one another on all six artists. |
Objectives:
- To recognize different line weights, colors and mark-making techniques as "style identifiers" in art work.
- To synthesize such "style identifiers" in an original design composed by the student.
- To use Design Principles such as Variety, Rhythm, Movement, Emphasis and Balance effectively in a composition.
- To colorize the design (where appropriate) in a medium that enhances the connection with the lead artist.
