Leaves: Twirling, whirling, they dance to the music of the wind

Studio Art students continued their study of line and shape by practicing "Continuous Contour Line Drawing" to hone their observational skills and develop a sense of Proportion and Orientation, the relative sizes and angles of parts in a whole. They did both blind and regular contour line drawings under the stricture of never lifting up their pen point, just following the contour with their eyes and drawing tool. When they'd practiced drawing hands and leaves, they were ready to create "a merry dance" of leaves across long narrow paper to simulate the random fluttering of leaves as they fall. After that, students experimented with water color techniques such as "wet-on-wet diffusion" to blend colors similar to those seen in nature. OBJECTIVES:
To become proficient at continuous contour line drawing to describe the perimeter and some connected details in an object.
To improve powers of observation and translate what is seen into proportionate, accurately oriented depictions on paper.
To create a design/composition emphasizing Proportion, Overlap, Movement, and Variety of color, size, shape, angle and baseline position on the page.
To use color to add balance and unity to the design.
To learn the properties of water color paint by experimenting with diffusion techniques.
