Studio Art students got a break to draw Frankenstein at Halloween -- a break that taught them a lot about dramatic lighting and how to blend value around the "hills and valleys" of the face. For many, it was a first experience with chalk pastels as a portrait medium.
OBJECTIVES:
To learn the proportions of the human face (or, in this case, the face made up from a bunch of humans!)
To reinforce observational skills in terms of light and shadow rather than line only.
To show depth by "wrapping" values (different degrees of darkness and light) around the "hills and valleys" of the face.
To understand how strong lighting and the angle of light can create drama through high contrast.
To experiment with the properties of chalk pastel as a portrait medium
